Nature is everywhere, if you just look for it
One morning, as I walked to the Subway station with my daughter, we got into a conversation about flowers. “I don’t actually know what any of them are called,” I confessed. She pointed at a particularly prominent rose bush from the neighbor’s garden. “That one is called Francis,” she said. “But you can call him Mr. Hall until you know him better.” And suddenly, the early morning didn’t seem as grim and coffee-less as it had 2 minutes before. (Yes, I did make coffee before leaving home. No, I didn’t have time to drink it).
When I started Kær, I was driven by a very simple thought: nature is good for your (mental) health. That’s still very much at the core of our designs. Living in a large city, it feels like I am chasing every bit of blue sky, every bit of greenery. Don’t get me wrong: after 14 years, I am still very much in love with New York City. We’re through the honeymoon stage, sure, but every day I find something new (or newly discovered) to love about living here. This morning, it was the gardens on the way to the Subway in Windsor Terrace; this afternoon it might be the potted plants in my favorite Friday afternoon hang-out spot (see below). Point being, though, that this intensely urban environment can feel oppressive until you start looking for the nature which, as it happens, is everywhere.
Long story short: when you can’t find nature, our mission at Kær is to bring her to you. Visit us here!
