The answer is organizing and human relationships. Even in the time of pandemics. When I phonebanked in the lead-up to the GA Run-Off (Go Warnock and Ossoff!), I spoke to people who didn't want to go vote because they had not felt affected personally by the pandemic. I did not get the sense that this was selfishness, however. It was more about survivors' guilt, or a sense that they somehow didn't have the "right" to have a political stance because things were fine for them personally. It's related, because people like McCain and others with media prominence have contributed to a culture where it's not only ok to be selfish, but almost not ok NOT to be. The answer is awareness-raising, organizing, and genuine connection.
